Evaluation and Assessment in Tanzania’s Education System
In Tanzania, evaluation and assessment play a central role in monitoring student learning, improving teaching quality, and preparing learners for future opportunities. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), together with the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA), have established structured systems to ensure fair, reliable, and standardized measurements of academic progress.
Continuous Assessment (CA):
Throughout the school year, students are evaluated through tests, assignments, projects, and classroom participation. This ongoing process helps teachers identify learning gaps early and provide targeted support.Mock Examinations / Zonal Examinations:
Before national exams, schools and educational zones often organize mock examinations. These joint exams, like the Form Four Zonal Mock Examinations (Mbeya, Katavi, Njombe, Ruvuma, and Songwe), are designed to simulate the real national examinations. They help students familiarize themselves with exam formats, manage time effectively, and assess readiness.National Examinations (NECTA):
At the end of key stages — such as Standard Seven (PSLE), Form Two (FTNA), Form Four (CSEE), and Form Six (ACSEE) — NECTA administers national exams. These assessments determine progression to higher levels of education and sometimes professional pathways.Purpose of Evaluation:
Improvement of Learning: Identifying strengths and weaknesses helps both students and teachers adjust learning strategies.
Accountability: Ensures that schools meet national standards.
Selection & Certification: Provides a fair system to select students for the next educational stage and certify their achievements.
Challenges & Ongoing Reforms:
While the system has produced skilled graduates for decades, challenges remain, including large class sizes, resource gaps, and limited access to modern testing tools. Tanzania continues to reform its curriculum and assessment systems, introducing competence-based approaches that emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical skills.
