ZANZIBAR LOCATION

  • Geography: Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, made up of two main islands (Unguja and Pemba) plus several smaller islets.

  • Position: Located in the Indian Ocean, about 36 km off mainland Tanzania (Dar es Salaam).

SECONDARY EDUCATION IN ZANZIBAR

Education in Zanzibar is guided by both the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training Zanzibar and Tanzania’s national education policies, though Zanzibar has its own curriculum adaptations.

1. Structure of Secondary Education

  • Ordinary Level (O-Level): 4 years (Forms I–IV). Students take national examinations (Zanzibar National Form Four Examinations and also NECTA exams in some cases).

  • Advanced Level (A-Level): 2 years (Forms V–VI). Students specialize in subject combinations (e.g., EGM – Economics, Geography, Mathematics).

2. Curriculum

  • Subjects include:

    • Core: Kiswahili, English, Mathematics, Civics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History.

    • Optional: Commerce, Bookkeeping, Computer Studies, Fine Arts, Islamic Knowledge/Christian Religious Education, French, Arabic.

  • A strong emphasis on Kiswahili (as the local language) but English is the main medium of instruction in secondary schools.

3. Examinations

  • National exams are administered by NECTA (Tanzania Mainland) and sometimes Zanzibar Examinations Council (ZEC).

  • Students must pass Form Four exams to join A-Level or vocational/teacher training.

NB:There are a lot of similarities between Tanzania main land education and Zanzibar education.
